Signs, Symptoms and Treatments for Heavy Leg Syndrome

With all we have to deal with these days, we have to work hard to get what we need in our lives.  For many of us that can mean being on our feet for hours at a time but that can be strenuous when you are feeling less than your very best.  If you have heard of Heavy Leg Syndrome, and have felt any of the symptoms, you know how terribly uncomfortable it can be.

Some of the symptoms of Heavy Leg Syndrome can be swollen legs, feelings of tiredness in your legs, achiness, restlessness, tense feelings and just plain feeling uncomfortable.  So, what causes this condition?  It can be just your general lifestyle affecting your veins and muscles.  If you sit or stand for long periods without sufficient exercise, blood can accumulate in the veins.  Excessive fluid inside the leg tissues can also cause a lot of discomfort and tension in the legs, though poor circulation is a big contributor to the Heavy Leg Syndrome.    Such things as pregnancy, gaining weight, crossing your legs, anything that may restrict complete flow and circulation of blood can cause the Heaviness in the legs as well as Lymph edema (where the body has problems with excess fluids) which is usually caused by damage to the lymphatic system.

Apparently it has been predicted that more than 50% of women will be affected by Heavy Leg Syndrome and its symptoms.  It also affects people whose jobs require them to be on standing for long periods of time or, just the opposite, people who sit all day long, getting no circulation of the legs.  And, again, pregnant and overweight people are much more susceptible to the condition.

There are some simple steps you can take to relieve the uncomfortable feelings in your legs.  The best thing to do is to elevate your legs in order to get your blood flowing properly.  It would be best if you could do so several times throughout the day whether you prop them up on a chair and/or pillow.   This will also relieve some of the tension you are feeling in your legs.  If you are one that is susceptible to this condition, consider elevating your feet when you go to sleep as well.   The idea is always to try and elevate your feet above the level of your heart to get the fluids flowing better.

Of course, there are creams and gels that you can purchase and use to relieve the distress of Heavy Leg Syndrome.    Ample exercises, drinking plenty of water and also possibly wearing special compression hose can all aid in the relief of Heavy Leg Syndrome.
